FAQs About

Hearing Tests

How often should I get a hearing test? +

Most adults should schedule a hearing test every two to three years, even if no symptoms are present. If you already wear hearing aids or notice changes such as turning up the TV or difficulty following conversations, it’s best to get tested annually. Regular assessments help track changes early and keep your hearing health on track.

What are the signs that I might need a hearing assessment? +

Common signs include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to hear conversations in noisy places, turning up the volume on the TV or phone, or feeling like others are mumbling. If you notice these symptoms, a professional hearing assessment can determine the cause and identify whether treatment or hearing aids may help.

Are hearing tests covered by insurance? +

Many insurance plans, including Canada Life (for federal public servants), cover a portion of hearing assessment fees. For example, as of July 2023, Canada Life covers up to $750 per calendar year for audiologist services. We’ll provide all necessary documentation to help you claim reimbursement through your plan.

If you’re unsure about your coverage or have questions about your insurance, contact us. Our team would be happy to help you navigate your benefits.

What happens during a hearing test at Treat Hearing? +

Your audiologist will begin with a quick ear exam using a small camera to check for wax or blockages. Then, we’ll measure how your eardrum moves, test the quietest sounds you can hear, and evaluate your speech understanding in different environments. You’ll leave with a clear picture of your hearing health and personalized recommendations for next steps.

Does a hearing test hurt or cause discomfort? +

Not at all. Hearing tests are completely safe and painless. You’ll wear comfortable headphones while we play a range of tones and speech sounds. Our audiologists ensure every step is explained clearly so you can relax throughout the process.

What’s the difference between a hearing screening and a full hearing assessment? +

A hearing screening is a quick check that identifies whether you might have hearing loss, while a comprehensive hearing assessment provides a detailed analysis of your hearing health. Full assessments include additional tests like middle-ear measurements, ultra-high-frequency audiometry, and speech-in-noise testing, so we can tailor treatment specifically to you.
